10 Unexpected Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Have you ever visited a chiropractor because you had pain in your neck or back? Many of us have. But that’s not all chiropractic care is good for. In fact, you can reap a whole host of health benefits when you pay regular visits to your chiropractor.

Chiropractic care improves your quality of life

Chiropractic care isn’t just about your spine. It involves the nervous system and every part of your body. The overall goal of chiropractic care is to improve musculoskeletal health, which impacts your daily function and quality of life.

When a chiropractor improves your body’s biomechanical dysfunctions, you start to experience a host of unexpected benefits, and we’ve outlined a few of them for you.

Improved immune function

A healthy immune system keeps viral and bacterial infections at bay. Your nervous system regulates cell functions, but even the slightest misalignment can interrupt the process, and this has a ripple effect on your immune system’s ability to fight off viruses.

Chiropractic care restores function to your nerves to ensure your cells are operating the way they ought to.

More energy

When your body is sore, joints and muscles tense up, resulting in inflammation. This tension and pain gets in the way of your well-being. But with chiropractic care, joint and muscles discomfort is reduced, and you experience a vitality boost.

Better asthma control

Do you find yourself reaching for your rescue inhaler more often than you’d like? People with asthma have reported a reduction in their symptoms after visiting the chiropractor. Spinal misalignments are known to disrupt the nerve impulses that are important for lung function, and realigning your vertebrae allows the nerves to function correctly.

Lowered blood pressure

Studies show that a chiropractic adjustment targets the nerves in your upper neck, which may be just as effective as taking blood pressure medication.

Improved digestion

The nerves running through your spine control your stomach functions. If the vertebrae are misaligned, your nerves may signal for more acid. This leads to acid reflux, gas, and heartburn. With chiropractic care, the nerves in your thoracic spine are affected, which may ease stomach issues.

Easier breathing

Even the lungs rely on nerve function to work the way they’re supposed to. When there is a misalignment in your cervical and thoracic spinal regions, it can result in lung problems. Chiropractic correction of these issues can help reduce lung inflammation and help you breathe easier.

Better balance

As we get older, balance can become a problem. While activities like tai-chi and regular exercise can help keep the core and legs strong, chiropractic care can also help improve your balance.

Healthier pregnancies

It’s been reported that chiropractic care may assist in healthier pregnancies and easier deliveries. Your body goes through momentous changes during pregnancy which impact the nervous system. Weight increases in the body’s core and ligaments in the pelvis loosen, placing increased pressure on your spine. Regular chiropractic sessions can ensure both a healthier mother and baby.

Splendid sleep

Pain and tension from a misaligned spine can result in sleepless nights. Chiropractic care can ease the pain and tension, aid relaxation and, ensure you enjoy a far more peaceful slumber.

Improved range of motion

Regular chiropractic care provides an improved range of motion, helping you to move easier and get through your daily activities with less effort.

If you want to improve your health through the many benefits of regular chiropractic care, the experts at Rider Chiropractic are here to help. Book your session today by calling our office in North Carolina, or clicking the button to schedule your appointment online.Read the rest

6 Benefits of Chiropractic Care on Wellness

If you’re dealing with chronic pain, chiropractic care can help. It focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and their impact on your general health and wellness. It’s also gained much more acceptance over the past 20 years as an effective form of healthcare. Chiropractic services are now widely in use, treating everything from back pain to stress to sports injuries.

With regular adjustments from your chiropractor, you can help keep your body balanced and healthy. Everyone, from children to seniors, can benefit from chiropractic wellness care.

How Chiropractic Wellness Care Works

Chiropractors use hands-on spinal manipulation, trigger-point therapy, electronic stimulation, and other treatments to bring the vertebrae in your neck and into proper alignment. By clearing blockage in nerve cells, restoring mobility to joints, and easing pain and muscle tension, chiropractic treatment allows your body to heal itself without surgery or medication.

6 Ways Your Health Can Improve

Headaches? Depression? Pain? Regular chiropractic wellness care can improve your life in many ways.

1. Less pain.

Many people suffer from chronic back or neck pain. Pain relievers can provide temporary relief, but they do nothing to fix the problem. Chiropractic adjustments address the origin of the pain.

2. Better posture.

If you’re doing desk work, you’re likely sitting down for longer periods than our bodies were designed for. Sitting in front of a computer for hours often leads to slumping and bad posture, which in turn puts a lot of extra pressure on our neck, shoulders, and hips. Regular chiropractic care can put your spine back into alignment.

3. Fewer headaches.

Roughly nine out of 10 Americans suffer from headaches. Since most headaches are linked to muscle tension in the neck, spinal manipulation and other chiropractic techniques can often effectively reduce headache pain.

4. Enhanced immune system.

To fight off infections and disease, our immune system relies on messages being sent correctly through our nerves. When vertebrae go out of alignment, they can pinch a nerve, potentially blocking these messages. Regular chiropractic wellness care can relieve the pressure on the nerve and allow the immune system to work at peak efficiency.

5. Reduced dependence on medication.

Because chiropractic care can relieve many types of pain without surgery, it can significantly reduce a person’s reliance on drugs. In fact, an estimated 96% of people with chronic back pain can be treated non-surgically.

6. Better mood.

Traditionally, mood swings or depression have been treated with medication. However, that route can be expensive and may still carry a social stigma. Chiropractic adjustments improve the nervous system, which can repair the chemical imbalance that often leads to mood swings. By clearing obstacles in our nerves, chiropractic care can also help us think more clearly.

7 Tips for Choosing a Chiropractor

Are you having back pain? Do you feel muscles tense up when you move them a certain way? Does it ever feel like something is just “off?” Visiting a chiropractor may be a good option, especially if you want to avoid medications or surgery. But giving someone the power to twist your spine around is a big decision. You may have let a friend crack your back at some point, but you need to put more thought into it than that when seeking professional treatment. So how do you pick the right chiropractor?

1. Seek Advice from Friends and Family.

Ask friends or family who have had chiropractic care done and ask about their experience. Even better, ask your primary care doctor for a list of practitioners. Remember that there are a lot of chiropractors out there, and this is not a decision to be made lightly, so don’t feel like you have to go with the first chiropractor you look into. You should have a list of multiple names to consider.

2. Protect Your Wallet.

As you go through the list, one of the first things to check is if your insurance will cover the treatment. You don’t want to get too attached to a particular chiropractor only to find out later that you will have to pay out of pocket. Furthermore, there may be specific services that your insurer will not cover. Many clinics can alleviate the financial sting by offering discounts on these services. Also, check if the chiropractor offers free initial consultations, but keep in mind that these typically only include discussions, not physical evaluations.

3. Research, Research, Research!

If you have a prospective candidate, look at credentials and experience. You want to be sure they know what they’re doing. is an excellent resource to find information about their medical school, training hospital, certifications, and malpractice and disciplinary history. There are post-graduate programs for more specific chiropractic fields such as orthopedics, sports, and rehabilitation, so research to see if your candidate’s training is conducive to your situation. If they claim to perform the procedure you need, ask how many times they have done it.

Read patient reviews to see what ordinary people have to say about the service. If you see the same handful of complaints pop up repeatedly, move on.

4. Seek Gender-Specific Care.

As with all medical procedures, gender-specific problems may arise during chiropractic care. More chiropractors are learning how to treat men and women differently, so ask the chiropractor about their experience in dealing with your gender. Any problems will be easier to navigate when your doctor understands them firsthand.

5. Pay Attention to a Chiropractors Personality and Communication.

When you first meet a chiropractor, note their body language and tone of voice. Do you feel welcomed? Do they seem frustrated or annoyed answering your questions, or only give partial answers? Are they cutting you off mid-sentence and making judgments from your incomplete thoughts? Are they providing detailed explanations in a way you can understand, or do they stick to medical jargon? Real-time communication is going to be crucial during any chiropractic treatment – you should understand them and feel like they know you.

6. Make a Note if Your Chiropractor Doesn’t Have a Plan for Your Health.

Based on your symptoms, a skilled chiropractor will be able to put an organized plan together, including methods to use, goals to achieve, and a solid timeline for getting there. They should also be able to evaluate progress along the way and give clear updates. “I guess we could try this and see what happens” does not count as a plan.

Be wary of a chiropractor who cannot give you a timeline of when the treatment will end. Especially concerning is if they demand payment upfront for extended care, even more so if they do this before a physical evaluation. You will generally only need a few weeks of care – if your pain subsides, resist any offers to continue treatment, as there is no evidence this has any benefit. And if you’re not seeing improvements within a few weeks, you probably need a new approach to your treatment anyway.

7. Does Your Chosen Chiropractor Focus Too Heavily on Supplements?

It is common for chiropractic clinics to sell products like dietary supplements and CBD oil. But be careful that they are not overemphasizing these products. No chiropractor should ever make you feel obligated to purchase anything. If they do feel that supplements would be beneficial, they should provide you with the information needed to make your own decision. Aside from the financial manipulation of pressuring you into buying products you might not need, it’s probable that actual chiropractic care is falling by the wayside. Make sure that your chiropractor is a chiropractor first.

Other Red Flags:

  • They want to adjust areas where there is no pain.
  • They claim to have invented a new technique that nobody else offers. There’s a reason that chiropractic methods take years to develop; don’t let yourself be a guinea pig.
  • They seem like they’re reading from a script rather than having a conversation with you. This may be a sign that they are not listening to your symptoms and always recommend the same treatment no matter what.
  • They claim to be able to cure unrelated conditions like asthma, arthritis, or high blood pressure. It may turn out that you need more than chiropractic care. A good chiropractor will have references for physiatrists, rehabilitation specialists, osteopaths, and physical therapists. If they don’t, they may be overconfident in their abilities to solve problems outside their field, which may mean poor relationships with fellow practitioners.

How Can You Protect Yourself?

There are many ways to protect yourself. For example, ask during the initial consultation which methods they plan to use to get an idea of how prepared they are. If you have doubts about anything that was said, we recommend taking the time to do more research or seek a second opinion rather than making a hasty decision. You can also protect yourself by checking their website and social media pages to ensure that any supplemental items they sell don’t come at the expense of chiropractic care. And make sure that two-way communication is clear to save yourself unnecessary pain or confusion down the line.

5 Benefits of Chiropractic Care Even If You’re Not in Pain

Chiropractic is a hands-on approach to medicine that focuses on spinal manipulation to improve health. Your spine is at the center of your musculoskeletal system, and if it’s misaligned, you can experience pain or discomfort in a variety of ways.

One of the most common reasons patients visit a chiropractor is a pain. Back pain, neck pain, and headaches are some of the top conditions chiropractors address. But did you know that there are benefits to chiropractic care that go beyond pain relief?

Through chiropractic adjustments, your body is able to function efficiently. Maintaining health naturally can prevent health complications before they start, minimizing the need for drugs or surgical procedures to keep you feeling well long-term.

Jason Keller, DC, is our resident chiropractor at iMed Regeneration Center in Colorado Springs. He believes chiropractic adjustments improve overall bodily function and wellness — whether or not you’re seeking treatment for pain.

Call our office or book your first appointment online today to find out if chiropractic is a good option for you. In addition to pain management, chiropractic care can improve your:

Range of motion

Even if you’re not in pain, your joints, connective tissue, and ligaments change and deteriorate over time. Chiropractic care manipulates your body to maintain and even improve your range of motion.

Chiropractic improves joint mobility and may reduce your chances of suffering joint and cartilage deterioration later in life. Chiropractic treatment also addresses muscle strength, helping to loosen tight muscles and strengthen weaker muscles.

Nervous system function

Your spine contains bundles of nerves that connect your entire body to your brain. Your nervous system controls every bodily function, from digestion to immunity. Spinal misalignments can impede your nervous system and cause almost imperceptible changes in how your body works.

Chiropractic care enhances your nervous system function and boosts blood flow throughout your body. Removing interference improves your nervous system’s ability to carry nerve impulses to the brain, enhancing whole body performance.

Your digestive system and nervous system are closely linked. Nerves in your spine control how your body digests food, while subluxations, or spinal misalignments, can interfere with digestion.

Conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea, constipation, and even heartburn can be relieved with chiropractic care. Through chiropractic adjustments, Dr. Keller removes the blockages in the nerves that control digestion, and you can see improvements in the way you feel.

Quality of sleep

Misalignments in the spine — even those that don’t cause noticeable pain — might be interfering with your sleep. Regular chiropractic adjustments take the unhealthy strain and stress off of the nerves and bones in your spine, promoting relaxation.

In addition to adjustments, Dr. Keller can make recommendations about healthy sleeping positions. Getting a supportive pillow or mattress, as well as not sleeping on your stomach, can help your body feel better while you sleep.

Immune system

Your immune system is influenced by your nervous system and endocrine system. Because chiropractic care helps your body operate at its peak performance, it can strengthen your immune system and help you fight off germs.

You don’t have to be in pain to experience the benefits of chiropractic adjustment. While treatment varies for every individual, many patients see their overall wellness improve with chiropractic care. Contact us today to learn more.… Read the rest

6 Major Benefits Of Chiropractic Massage

Massage therapy has been around for centuries benefiting everyone who takes part in the relaxing ritual. Although there are many types of massages, the numerous benefits are dispersed throughout all of the different techniques. As the techniques have changed among cultures it has been discovered that there are many more benefits to chiropractic massages than originally thought. Below are eight major benefits that are connected with chiropractic massages.

  • Ease Pain:

Due to the amount of relaxation that occurs during a massage, your body releases the tension that is causing some of the pain. When this tension is lowered the amount of pain is eased.

  • Improve Performance:

Massage removes tension, breaks up adhesions and scar tissue, improves joint mobility and range of motion, as well as flushes lactic acid and other toxins out of muscle tissue. This improves balance and proprioception.

  • Improve Recovery:

Massages directly influence the production of serotonin in the body, which is then needed for the production of melatonin. Melatonin helps regulate sleep and wake patterns to produce a better night’s rest which improves recovery.

  • Headache Relief:

Like many of these other massage benefits, headaches can be alleviated once stress and sleep deprivation are taken care of. Headaches are mostly due to tension that comes from the amount of stress you are under as well as your lack of sleep. When massages take care of your stress and give you a better night’s rest, headaches caused by tension go away.

  • Manage Anxiety and Depression:

Massages have always been known for making the recipient relaxed and to lower stress levels, because of these two things it would seem likely that massages would also help manage your anxiety and depression levels. Massages help boost the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine that are both involved with depression.

  • Strengthen Your Immune System:

After seeing that massages both help improve sleep and alleviate stress it’s a simple formula to say that these two things added together will automatically strengthen your immune system.

  • Lowering Blood Pressure:

We have all heard about how stress seems to directly correlate with high blood pressure. There is research that shows many patients that are relieved of their stress also see their blood pressure drop. Since massages and stress relief goes hand in hand, lowering your blood pressure can also be a big benefit of your chiropractic massage.… Read the rest

What Is the Difference Between Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Physiotherapists?

What Is the Difference Between Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Physiotherapists?

You are certainly not alone if you have ever wondered what the difference between a chiropractor, osteopath and physiotherapist is. In many ways, the three professions work towards the same goals, albeit with slightly different techniques & philosophies.

All three professions are primary care practitioners meaning you do not need a referral from your GP.

As the global brand you can trust, ACE Sports Clinics offer client’s access to a chiropractor, osteopath or physiotherapist in Malvern.  Having helped clients from all over the world find solutions for pain, sports injuries & improved performance through our unique collaborative approach.

Read on to learn which may be best suited to your needs, and remember, a surefire answer comes with a quick phone call to the team at ACE Sports Clinic.

The differences between Chiropractors, Osteopaths & Physiotherapists

A Chiropractor is a specialist in the spine’s mechanical problems, offering solutions that can include manipulation, mobilisation, massage, and various other therapeutic exercises.

Chiropractors can take and read x-rays to help determine what may be causing your particular issue.  A Chiropractor’s philosophy begins with the nervous system & spine.

Osteopaths use a therapeutic approach that is similar to that of a chiropractor; however, Osteos use a range of gentle hands-on manual techniques including muscle energy techniques.

Osteopaths take a holistic approach to the body to treat spinal and peripheral joints, muscles and ligament sprains.  Osteopaths utilize fine palpation skills to detect tissue texture changes that may indicate altered function.

Physiotherapy is a broad field that covers a range of conditions of the musculoskeletal system. Traditionally, physiotherapists use exercise-based approaches, advice & have a rehabilitation & movement focus as opposed to being as hands-on as a Chiro or Osteo may be.

The difference between a Chiropractor & an Osteopath

Both of these professions focus on solving problems all over the body from spinal alignment and posture to headaches and joint pain.  They are similar, even though their approach can sometimes be very different.

A Chiropractor is often interested in how your body works but considers it all through a nerve, spinal and muscular system lens.  They focus on pain relief and injury recovery, using spine and joint adjustments along with massage and rehabilitative exercises to heal and improve a patient’s quality of life.

One crucial element to note is that chiropractors do not prescribe drugs, choosing instead to focus on drug-free alternative treatments.  Some Chiropractors have additional training in Acupuncture.

An Osteopath will often take a more holistic approach, examining a person’s entire body to find the underlying cause of a particular issue.  The focus is often a way to combat pain or injury, using massage, muscle energy, physical therapy and body manipulation.

Osteopathy considers the deformation of the skeleton and interference with nerves.  Some Osteopaths have additional training in Dry Needling.

Both Chiropractors and Osteopaths treat patients by maximizing the bodies range of motion in an effort to restore better overall function.

Understanding Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that looks to identify and maximise a person’s ability to move and function.  Physiotherapy can help you improve your health and overall quality of life.

A Physio has professional knowledge and skills to determine which social and environmental factors may be limiting the patient’s movement and function. They work to identify what is limiting movement and performance, then implement a way to address it.

Physiotherapy is person-centred and constantly evolving as new knowledge and understanding reveal themselves through evaluation and research.  Physiotherapy is an autonomous profession, meaning referrals can come from a range of sources.

Physiotherapy has a primary goal to maximise an individual’s movement capability, maintain and improve movement and function with treatment and provide rehabilitation and advice.  In many cases, this can enhance the patient’s performance with quality, innovative services that are effective and efficient.  Physiotherapy is also heavily linked to clinical and academic studies, regularly adapting to developments in practice, education or research.  Some Physiotherapists also have additional training in Dry Needling.

How do you know which option is best for you?

As you can see by the explanations above, there is quite a bit of overlap in the conditions and injuries that a Chiro, Physio & Osteo can help.  Depending on your treatment preference all three professions may be suitable for some injuries, with clear options for others, e.g., a slipped disc or spinal facet joint injury may require a Chiropractor or Osteopath while a post ACL reconstructive injury may require a Physiotherapist for rehabilitation.

So how do you know which can help you?

Initially, we recommend a consultation with one of the diagnosing and primary practitioners at ACE Sports Clinic (Physiotherapist, Osteopath or Chiropractor) to evaluate your issue, then determine which channel may be best to suit your needs.

This is one of the primary advantages of offering all three options to our clients.  We work as a collaborative team to ensure you get the best results.  Many of our clients see multiple practitioners at Ace Sports Clinics because over the years we have seen how exponentially better results are when Practitioners work as a team and communicate together in your best interests.

Prevention without injury

In many cases, you may wish to see one of our Osteopaths, Physiotherapists or Chiropractors for a regular session to keep your body running smoothly instead of dealing with a specific issue. Similar to a regular car service.

Therapeutic treatment, soft tissue massage & mobilisation, with exercises can be beneficial even when not injured.  Our experience suggests that people who take a more proactive approach to treatment have fewer issues in the long term.

Relieving some tightness, increasing flexibility and checking to see that all your joints are aligned and operating well is all part of a regular preventative checkup.

If you work at a desk all day or have a very physically demanding job, soft tissue massage and stretching can be used in addition to Chiro, Osteo or Physio, to loosen and relax tight, sore muscles. Massage therapy stimulates blood flow to reduce tissue swelling, helping you to feel great after a hard day.

Our Myotherapists & Remedial Massage therapists help with stress and tension and a range of other benefits.  It is a chance to let the body relax and focus on healing and maintaining a balanced system that complements the work of Chiropractors, Osteopaths & Physiotherapists Malvern.

A Chiropractor’s Tips for Living a Healthy Life

When you get care from a chiropractor, you expect to hear advice such as strengthen your back muscles or buy a pillow for your neck. You don’t really expect them to give you tips on living a healthy lifestyle overall. And yet, this is the advice that many people hear from their spinal doctor. The chiropractor wants you to be healthy as a whole, but what does live a healthy lifestyle even mean? How do we begin the journey toward a more balanced, healthier condition? Take a look at these tips for improving your overall life that would be 100 percent chiropractor approved.

Focus on Eating Well

Filling your body with the proper nutrients is absolutely crucial for long-term health. If you’re constantly filling your body with junk, eventually you’ll feel a little like junk. Eating lean meats, fruits, and veggies gives your body a fighting chance at staying well. You’ll get the vitamins and minerals that you need, you’ll be able to control your weight, and your rate of illness will lower like never before. All of these help serve the chiropractor’s main purpose, which is to help you stay as healthy and whole as possible.

Get a Little Exercise Every Day

Exercise is such a great way to enhance your life, and if you do it right, it’s also a lot of fun. Exercise can help you fight off disease, improve your general mobility, and even help to diminish pain … all of which are ultimate goals of getting chiropractic care as well! When you put these two powerhouses together, you’ll find that staying well is as simple as regular trips to the chiropractor and the gym.

Don’t Forget Your Regular Trip to the Chiropractor

Of course chiropractors also want you to come in for regular visits. Why? For starters, chiropractors help to get and keep your spine properly aligned. This helps to eliminate pain, increase flexibility, improve focus, and brings a ton of other benefits to your body and mind. With regular trips, they may be able to keep your spine in proper working condition, which then prevents many of these ailments from returning in the future. Eat well, exercise, and see your chiropractor, and you’ve got a recipe for ultimate wellness no matter your age or time of year.

If you would like to add chiropractic care to your life, visit with chiropractors at The Joint. Chiropractors here are friendly and professional, and they’ll always put your health first. What Happens at the Chiropractor?

While visiting a chiropractor is similar to visiting other healthcare providers, it does have some unique elements. You will likely find the office setting and intake procedures quite familiar, but many notice the distinctive appearance of the chiropractic treatment table. These tables are often quite elaborate to allow specific positioning and movement during spinal adjustments and thus assist the chiropractic treatment.

A typical visit to a chiropractor includes an initial intake, physical exam, treatment, and follow-up plan.

What happens during the intake?

An initial chiropractic consultation is very similar to that of a standard medical intake. You will likely complete a health questionnaire and answer questions about your health history. Typically the chiropractor asks you to indicate where you are experiencing discomfort by marking the areas on a drawing of the human body.

What happens during the physical exam?

X-ray of spineThe chiropractor will start with a routine physical exam, then follow it with an exam that focuses on the spine, with particular attention given to the areas of complaint. The chiropractor will most likely examine your whole spine. For example, if you had a low back complaint, the chiropractor would also likely perform a neck exam because the adaptations resulting from injury or subluxation in one area can result in secondary irritations somewhere else in the spine.

The physical exam typically includes a variety of assessments, such as range of motion tests, palpation, reflex testing, muscle strength comparisons, and neurological and orthopedic tests focused on the main complaint.

What goes into a treatment plan?

Following the assessments, the chiropractor will develop a treatment plan that takes into account:

  • The extent of your injury or irritation
  • Your general health
  • The condition of your spine as affected by age and previous injury
  • What your goals are – this is most important item

Chiropractor discussing treatmentYour goals of treatment should result from the discussion you have with your chiropractor. Many people seek simple relief of pain or discomfort, while others want to begin a regimen of ongoing care meant to improve their general health.

In initial consultations, your chiropractor will tell you the status of your condition and recommend an approach to care. Ask questions. As in any professional-patient relationship, trust and mutual understanding are vitally important.

What is a typical treatment?

“Adjustments” are usually the central part of chiropractic treatment. The chiropractic adjustment is a therapeutic manipulation that uses controlled force, leverage, direction, amplitude, and velocity directed at specific joints. In other words, an adjustment involves a lot more than simply opening up a joint. Click the videos listed in the column on the left to see examples.

Woman receiving adjustmentYour chiropractor will most often make these adjustments to the spine, but he or she might adjust other joints, such as the ankle, knee, wrist, elbow, or shoulder in order to restore structural alignment or to improve joint function. Again, proper structure is necessary for proper function, and proper extremity function is an important part of healthy daily living.

When being treated for a complaint such as back or neck pain, you will most likely receive a series of adjustments, separated by either a day or a few days, to incrementally reduce the irritation and improve normal function. This might continue for several weeks, usually diminishing in frequency.

If you can’t tolerate the manual adjustments, you may instead receive mild or non-force techniques.

Adjustments are often accompanied by non-manual therapies such as application of heat or ice, electrical stimulation, orthotic supports for your shoes, rehabilitative exercise, counseling about diet, weight loss, and other lifestyle factors, and nutritional supplements.… Read the rest

Tips on how to improve your chiropractic health

Our waking hours are largely spent sitting, standing or walking.

  2. things such as standing up straight and not slouching. For more tips on how to best align your posture visit your chiropractor.

Staying active is incredibly important for your spine, posture and overall health. However, our lives are becoming increasingly sedentary, which can contribute to back, shoulder, neck and arm pain.  Integrate exercise into your day by getting up from your desk every half an hour, walking to work, taking up a sport or using your lunchbreak to do some exercise.

Working at a computer for long periods of time or testing on your mobile device can often create a lot of strain your neck, creating neck pain developing. Text neck is the new catch phrase used to describe  injuries and pain caused from looking down at wireless devices for too long. Symptoms associated with the dreaded text neck are chronic headaches, upper back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain and increased curvature of the spine. In fact some studies have suggested that text neck may lead to early onset arthritis and decreased lung capacity. If you think you have text neck or a headache, neck pain or back pain from staring at your computer screen for too long, don’t wait. Ask your chiropractor for advice or assessment of your posture and ergonomics at your workplace.

Picking up and moving heavy items without supporting our backs can lead to serious back injuries. However, bracing our core muscles and bending our knees (rather than our backs), can make moving items much safer. This also relates to smaller items we carry around every day, such as handbags and gym bags. Although bags are fashionable, an unsupportive bag filled with heavy items can lead to spinal strain and pain. Your chiropractor would be able to give you tips on carrying heavy items and advice on posture-supportive bags.

Posture isn’t only important during the day – we spend approximately one third of our lives sleeping, so the position in which we sleep is important too. Poor spinal health can lead to lower back or neck pain, which can in turn impact our sleep, denying us of the physical and mental rejuvenation sleep brings.

Chiropractors generally recommend sleeping on your back or side, rather than on your stomach, on a supportive mattress. Additionally, celebrity chiropractor, Tim Robards, recommends sleeping with a pillow between your knees, to ensure you have spinal and pelvic alignment whilst you rest.

Studies show that smokers experience back pain more frequently than non-smokers1.  This is because smoking reduces the amount of oxygen the body receives, which it needs in order to maintain healthy ligaments and muscles. This includes important muscles which support the spine, thereby impacting spinal health.

In addition to this, as smoking reduces lung function and capacity, it makes exercising regularly harder. Unfortunately, less exercise can lead to weaker muscles, weaker body structures and spinal pain.

The habits we establish as children can stay with us throughout our lives. In the case of our spines, the way we use and treat them when we are young can have a lasting impact on our backs and necks. With this in mind, it’s important to teach your children good posture and how to look after their backs from a young age, so that they can avoid back pain later on in life.

Taking steps to improve your spinal health may not make a huge difference if they are not integrated into a healthy lifestyle. Nutrition, wellness, mental health, exercise, and spinal health are all interrelated and connected, so it’s important to focus on your overall health in order to improve your spinal health.

Developing strong core muscles are important for supporting your back as you walk and sit, as they facilitate good posture and reduce back pain. Your chiropractor can give you exercises to improve the strength of your core, to give you a happy back.

Sometimes it’s hard to know where we need to make changes and improvements in our lives. This is something that your chiropractor may be able to help you with. An assessment of your health, including your spine and lifestyle, may assist you as to how you can improve your posture, have a happier spine and live a healthier life.
